We do not start anew; our products are rooted in pre-existing designs. Beginning with craftsmanship passed down through generations and incorporating historical elements, our design mentality aims to impart a contemporary twist to the essence.
Tona is a blend of preserving traditional techniques and contemporary minimalist design. With a commitment to quality materials, skilled craftsmanship, and passion, we strive to create authentic pieces. Tona shapes a smooth yet sharp aesthetic with a predominantly muted and earthy color palette. Although inspired by a particular place and time, Tona is both international and ageless in its scope.

We create independent design work using local resources and value collaboration with honest individuals, including artisans and artists from diverse cultural and design backgrounds.

​Our resources come from small batches, mainly finite in nature. While the material is consistent within each batch, handmade items may vary slightly between and within batches, making each piece unique.
We will do our best, however, to maintain a high standard of materials and design. Sizes may vary by approximately 1-2 cm, but we will strive to ensure uniform sizes within each category for a given order.

Tona is a Zapotec term that can be translated as energy, rise, or thrive. In Mesoamerican culture, on the special day of the Nahual Chuen - the creative monkey of the Tzolk'in calendar - there is a belief that one can transform creativity into the physical world.
According to mythology, on this auspicious day, a person must metaphorically become a monkey, ascend the tree of wisdom, and undergo a journey to attain creative enlightenment.
